Sonya Stefan is a media and dance artist from Canada who incorporates glitchy analog techniques such as 16mm and VHS, feedbacking light refractions, and dance film in her work. Sonya Stefan received two awards for her work titled The Truss Arch: the 2021 Best National Medium-Length Film award at the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) and the 2022 Best Experimental Film award at Les Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma. Her film was nominated for Best Short Documentary at the 2022 Iris Awards and screened at the prestigious Ann Arbor Film Festival.
During her residency with ArtlabPro in Argentina, Sonya collaborated with sound artist Lain-9 to debut a new work titled IK Pegasi, which was created over the course of a month using Touch Designer. She has collaborated with the multimedia dance company Animals of Distinction and the experimental music act Group A from Berlin, consisting of Tommi Tokyo and Sayaka Botanic. Sonya Stefan is currently in the research phase for a new dance documentary “The Feeling Behind” which focuses on the 25 years of Newton Moraes Dance Theatre. In partnership with artist Stephanie Castonguay, their collective “Technologies of Consciousness” was the first ever artist-in-residence at Biosphere Montreal researching bioplastics for a new work “The Intimacy of Strangers”.

Sonya Stefan est une artiste canadienne des médias et de la danse qui intègre dans son travail des techniques analogues glitchy telles que le 16 mm et le VHS, des réfractions lumineuses en boucle et des films de danse. Sonya a reçu deux prix pour son œuvre intitulée The Truss Arch : le prix du Meilleur moyen métrage national en 2021 aux Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (RIDM) et le prix de la Meilleure œuvre d’art et expérimentation en 2022 aux Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma. Son film a été nominé pour le prix du meilleur court métrage documentaire aux Iris Awards 2022 et a été projeté au prestigieux Ann Arbor Film Festival.
